If you missed them yesterday at the Boston Public Library, you still have a chance to ‘eavesdrop on history’. The momentum of their successful ‘invasion’ of the north will carry them into the quiet Boston suburb of Beverly Farms. To St. John’s Episcopal Church at 705 Hale Street, to be exact, where at 4 pm, they will present a program, free of charge, of patriotic songs and plantation melodies popular throughout the north and south 150 years ago. Don’t miss this rare opportunity to hear music of the Civil War authentically performed on period instruments.

HGAC proudly presents its second annual barn dance to be held on Saturday, October 1, 5-10 PM at Jonathan and Suzanne Ingram’s Three Springs Farm at 215 Oak Tree Rd., Cashtown, PA.

Our musicians will be the 2nd South Carolina String Band, who play and sing traditional Civil War music.   The band has had a very successful year at various reenactments up and down the East Coast, including the upcoming 150th Manassas and July’s 148th Gettysburg.  Calling for the band will be our own HGAC members, Dance Masters Norma Calhoun and Wayne Belt, who have called for the band before, most recently at the dance in Gettysburg for the 148th anniversary.

Festivities will begin at 5PM, when board member Stan McGee will be serving up his famous GAR ham and bean soup, made in the traditional manner in an iron cauldron over an open fire.   After the warming soup, attendees are invited to tour the barn with timber frame expert David Maclay.  Self-guided orchard tours are encouraged as well.  Dancing in the bunting-filled, circa 1843 barn will begin at 7PM and will end at 10PM.
